Student-led Innovation for Conflict Risk Mapping

Submitted by Kristof Hamelryckx on

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) has officially launched its latest “Capstone Project” collaboration with Barcelona’s ESADE University, as part of the UNGSC Academia Partnership Programme.

The Project engages students in generating fresh insights and innovative approaches to enhance data analysis at the United Nations, deliver technology solutions to field missions, and predict and prevent conflict.

Based on technical objectives provided by UNGSC’s Technology Design, Development and Planning Section (TDDPS) and Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU), ESADE Students will:

  • work on predictive analytics for conflict risk mapping, incorporating state-of-the-art technologies, like artificial intelligence and machine learning, into data analysis.
  • devise methods to predict potential conflict, utilizing real conflict-event mission data and other open-source data.
  • apply innovative problem-solving skills to generate unique data analysis insights that benefit UN projects related to conflict prevention.

The current Capstone Project collaboration is running from January – June 2023. For more information, please contact Teresa Giner (giner@un.org).
