Welcome to the Strategic Deployment Stocks Catalogue

Rapid Support for Peace Operations and Crisis Response

In the face of crisis, long procurement times can delay operations, putting lives at risk. Strategic Deployment Stocks (SDS) significantly reduces the wait - enabling even the most complex operations to go into effect in a fraction of the time.

Having supported over 100 clients, with over 1900 deployments and more than $760 million in critical supplies delivered to peace operations and emergencies worldwide since 2002, SDS has become the go to resource in times of crisis.

Whether responding to natural disasters, assisting with operational surges, or ensuring business continuity, SDS offers pre-positioned, rapidly deployable equipment tailored to urgent needs. Building on this foundation, we aim to transition from providing strategic stocks to delivering strategic solutions—by integrating associated services into the SDS portfolio and expanding our capacity to meet evolving operational demands.

Enabling a Mission Start-up Amid a Humanitarian Crisis

To address the escalating political, security, and humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic in 2014-15, the UN Security Council established a peacekeeping mission to protect civilians and support the country’s transition to stability.

SDS played a pivotal role in the swift deployment of the mission and force headquarters by rapidly delivering $66M worth of critical equipment. With essential infrastructure, ICT systems, healthcare, security, and transport resources in place, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was able to begin operations within a little over a month, an undertaking that would usually require more than a year.

Responding to Natural Disaster

In 2010, Haiti’s deadliest earthquake caused extensive devastation, including significant loss of life, the collapse of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) headquarters, and severe operational disruption.

SDS played a critical role in the rapid re-establishment of mission headquarters, providing $36M worth of prefabricated buildings, earth-moving equipment, ICT systems, healthcare, security, and transport assets. This rapid deployment enabled the re-establishment of mission headquarters within a little over a month, a process that would have otherwise taken over a year.

Protecting Personnel

In 2023, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) required urgent support to ensure the safety of its staff amid a security crisis in Eastern Europe.

By immediately providing armoured vehicles and personal protective equipment, SDS enabled the IAEA to swiftly deploy its team to a high-risk environment. Procuring these items through the commercial market would have taken eight to nine months, significantly delaying critical operations.

Services and Location

Established in 2002 to assist peacekeeping mission start-ups, SDS has expanded into a global rapid-response solution, supporting UN peacekeeping and special political missions, other UN Secretariat entities, Agencies, Funds, Programmes, and other partners, while continuing to fulfill its core mandate.

Located at the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy, SDS leverages a logistics hub with 18,000 m³ of storage, including warehouses, a bonded facility, and extensive yard space.

Importantly, the Base is adjacent to an airport capable of accommodating large aircraft and is also in close proximity to major ports in Southern Italy, where the largest shipping providers operate, enabling swift global delivery.

UNGSC also provides essential support services, including warehousing, maintenance, shipping, and contract management, as well as technical personnel dedicated to the inspection and maintenance of critical assets such as vehicles, wastewater treatment plants, generators, and ICT systems. The high competency and dedication of UNGSC staff underpin the success of SDS.

Moreover, as a subset of SDS, and in collaboration with the Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE), Regional Deployment Stocks (RDS) has been established to enhance operational capabilities in the East African region, with select commodities strategically positioned to support rapid deployment needs.

Backed by a robust supply chain, SDS is your trusted partner in preparedness and operational agility, ensuring seamless logistics and a timely response to emerging needs across regions.
