Building UN Leadership and Management for Complex Operational Environments

Submitted by nestola on

The United Nations Global Service Centre (#UNGSC) hosted the 4th edition of the Enhanced Training for High-level Operational Support (ETHOS) workshop.

This intensive five-day training brings together middle managers from UN field missions, other UN entities, and the African Union Commission. Developed by the Capacity Development and Operational Training Service (CDOTS) of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) and the Integrated Training Service (ITS) of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), ETHOS combines online learning with in-person mentoring from senior UN leaders.

Participants build essential leadership and operational skills to support UN mandates in complex environments, strengthening decision-making, problem-solving, and emergency response through realistic, hands-on simulations. The course also provides an opportunity for participants to build a network with peers and mentors that extends beyond the workshop.

Feedback from participants has highlighted the impact of this course, particularly for its scenario-based exercises and mentoring sessions.

One of the participants, Mr. Diego Gonzalez Ferreiro, UNGSC’s Chief of Solutions and Support Unit, shared: "ETHOS gave me a clearer understanding of senior management responsibilities in the UN and the broader scope of our roles. Learning directly from mentors with real mission experience was invaluable. The case studies were realistic and challenging, pushing us out of our comfort zones while offering practical takeaways. It’s an intense but incredibly rewarding course — and connecting with colleagues across the system made it even more meaningful."
