UNGSC launches Autonomous Surveillance System Proof of Concept

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Smart technologies can be instrumental in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, SDG #9, which calls for building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation.

Autonomous indoor drones present vast potential in this regard. Equipped with sensors and cameras, they can navigate complex indoor spaces, conduct tasks without human intervention, and detect irregularities, triggering immediate responses to avert major incidents.

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) is conducting a proof of concept, using this technology in its data center at the United Nations Information Communications Technology Facility (UNICTF) in Valencia, Spain.

Aimed at enhancing the data center’s resilience, an autonomous drone system will be tested for use-cases including Physical security; Intrusion detection; Inspection for damage and potential hazards; Disaster prevention from malfunction or failed refrigeration; Inventory management; and Environmental monitoring.

Projected benefits feature: Cost optimization, as a combination of personnel and uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) for indoor patrolling reduces operational costs; Enhanced safety and security, protecting security personnel from potential hazards; Improved situational awareness and decision-making; and Rapid emergency response, enabled by the UAS’ 24/7 availability.

A multi-functional smart technology initiative at UNGSC, the project will run for six months. Upon its conclusion, lessons learned, and best practice guidelines, will be provided to UN Peacekeeping missions, the UN Secretariat, partner organizations, funds, and programmes interested in exploring this smart solution.
