Following the adoption of UN Security Council resolution S/RES/2690 (2023), terminating a decade-long UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) will provide on-site and remote support for the Mission’s drawdown and liquidation.

Informed by lessons-learned from the peacekeeping mission closure in Darfur, Sudan (UNAMID), stakeholders are cognizant of the challenges ahead, not least given the timeline of completing the drawdown by 31 December 2023.

In that connection, the process of diverting equipment destined for Mali to other missions is already underway.

High value assets held by the mission are being evaluated for return, refurbishment, and reuse, as per UNGSC’s “3R Program,” and will be tracked to enable transparency and accountability.

Special attention is being allocated to the responsible disposal of all waste, environmental clean-up, and the remediation of sites.

A delegation led by Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General, UN Department of Operational Support (DOS), with Giovanna Ceglie, Director, UNGSC, and Paulin Djomo, Director, Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE), was recently on-site, and a UNGSC Supply Chain Service team of specialists for warehouse operations and property disposal has been deployed on the ground to assist.

Work is being conducted in close cooperation with RSCE, under the guidance of DOS and the Office of Supply Chain Management (OSCM), and an interdisciplinary Working Group has been formed to ensure business continuity.
