ISO 45001: Strengthening Workplace Safety and Health

Submitted by nestola on

Safety and health at work are more than requirements - they are the foundation of reliable service.

In 2023, UNGSC achieved ISO 45001 certification of its Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS), the globally recognized standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Following two years of continuous improvement, UNGSC has just been successfully recertified for both its Bases in Brindisi and in Valencia.

This achievement confirms a proactive approach to managing risks, preventing work-related injury and ill-health, and aligning with international best practice in staff protection. UNGSC is also one of the few UN entities to hold ISO 45001 certification, underscoring the Centre’s role in setting a benchmark for workplace health and safety across the UN Secretariat.

“As work environments and operational demands evolve, our priority remains staying ahead of emerging occupational safety and health risks. This means advancing our safety and health systems to not only respond to hazards but to predict and eliminate or mitigate them before they impact our teams and operations” - Lecy Nickson Tah Monunde, Chief, UNGSC Occupational Safety and Health Unit.

These initiatives highlight that occupational safety and health are not separate from UNGSC’s mission - they enable it, as it is also by safeguarding its personnel that UNGSC can ensure the continuity and reliability of the critical support it provides to United Nations operations worldwide.
