Enhancing Peacekeeping Operations with Smart Technology

Submitted by Nadia Caputo on

UNGSC was pleased to host a milestone Workshop at our Valencia Base, bringing together representatives from Member States, UN Field Missions, and United Nations Headquarters to advance the UN Smart Camp initiative.

The Workshop highlighted Remote Infrastructure Monitoring (FRIM), a core component of UN Smart Camp, which leverages Internet of Things (IoT) technology to improve the efficiency and sustainability of UN peacekeeping operations.

Currently, FRIM applies to UN owned equipment with over 38,000 data points and 8,100 infrastructure devices monitored across 21 UN entities and 12 Peacekeeping Missions. Successful pilots in missions like UNISFA, have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in minimizing power outages, optimizing fuel supply, and preventing infrastructure failures.

The Workshop focused on extending the benefits of these technologies to Contingent-Owned Equipment (COE), which make up 51% of UN Camps. Discussions centered around automating data collection, improving operational efficiency, enhancing decision-making, and ensuring strong cybersecurity.

Looking ahead, participants explored new opportunities for partnerships, pilot projects, training, and funding, as well as the creation of a Community of Practice to foster ongoing collaboration and innovation.

UNGSC thanks all participants for their dedication to advancing the digital transformation of peacekeeping to enhance security, efficiency, and sustainability.
