Countering Disinformation with Geospatial Intelligence

Submitted by Nadia Caputo on

In a world where information moves faster and faster, the ability to verify images, photos and other digital content is essential for United Nations decision-making and it is even more essential for trust and impact.

The Imagery and Video Counter-Disinformation Analytics Service (ICDAS) is an in-house capability developed for this very purpose - to rapidly and reliably verify digital content to ensure that both decisions and public information remain fact-based. Leveraging artificial intelligence and geospatial, temporal, and contextual analysis, UNGSC specialists authenticate photos and videos and detect potential manipulation. Content from missions, media, and social networks are cross-checked against satellite imagery, UN Maps, and Digital Twin data, producing concise authentication reports, dashboards, and archives to support operational and strategic communication.

Piloted with MINURSO and now offered to UN entities, including Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, ICDAS helps limit the spread of misinformation targeting the UN’s mission.
