The Government of Italy and the United Nations have signed a new agreement aimed at securing a financial contribution for improvements to the facilities of the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy.
"This agreement marks a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between the UN and the host country of Italy," noted United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare, who signed on behalf of the UN. "We are grateful for Italy's continued support, which will enable UNGSC and DOS to further enhance our operational capabilities to meet the needs of all clients and stakeholders."
The agreement coincides with UNGSC's 30th anniversary and sets the stage for a new phase of the Centre's development. While maintaining its core function to support peace operations, in line with the GA Resolution A/RES/78/295, UNGSC is also called to meet the growing needs of regional and international partners “within the comprehensive context of the global support architecture, with a view to providing more and efficient services to other entities, as well as developing broader cooperation with regional organizations”.
Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, who signed on behalf of the Italian government, stressed that “new targeted infrastructure investments will enable the Service Center to respond even more quickly and effectively to international emergencies by actively contributing to vital UN operations”.
The United Nations is grateful for this significant contribution and looks forward to continued partnership in support of international peace and security.
