Gold CEEDA Certification for the TIS team

Submitted by Kristof Hamelryckx on

The Certified Energy Efficient Datacentre Award or CEEDA, is an independently evaluated global certification program designed to recognize the implementation of best energy efficiency practices in data centres.

The TISU reached the gold standard thanks to its recent innovations, including Tier III certification, the installation of free cooling systems in Brindisi and Valencia, and automated Field Remote Infrastructure Monitoring (FRIM) for temperature control and energy reporting. The gold CEEDA certificate officially recognizes the implementation of best energy efficiency practices across approximately 80 metrics.

By complying with the gold standard CEEDA framework and recommendations, the TISU has significantly reduced Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and total energy consumption. Even during the hot summer temperatures in Brindisi and Valencia, PUE is  well below 2 (the ideal being 1) at both data centres (DC). The next step will be a gap analysis that will be used to generate sets of recommendations to further optimize performance and harmonization across all DCs. By driving innovation at the DCs in Brindisi and Valencia, the TISU has reduced both energy consumption costs and their environmental footprint.

Modifying the DC was a creative process requiring ingenuity from the TISU to generate solutions to increase efficiency while ensuring all the TISU staff remained protected from Covid-19 during the implementation.

“Besides operating world-class technology centers at the UNGSC, they are also one of the ‘greenest’. This has now been independently verified and is a testament to the professionalism and commitment of the technical staff in Brindisi and Valencia. I congratulate all of the colleagues for this herculean achievement and for their ongoing commitment to improving our service delivery environment!”  - Michel Bergeron, Chief, SGITT / UNGSC.
