To ensure a smooth journey, all United Nations personnel or visitors travelling to the UNGSC Brindisi Base for training, meetings, or conferences are kindly requested to prepare their visa to guarantee entrance to Italy. 

Transportation and accommodation information has been included in this page. 

If travelling for training, the Conference and Learning Centre team at ungsc-cslc@un.org, can be contacted in case assistance with hotel booking is required.  

1) Candidates selected for international positions in Brindisi, Italy, need a valid visa issued by the relevant authorities prior to reporting for duty; no travel can commence prior to obtaining the visa. In this respect, the Organization will initiate formalities to obtain the visa following the candidate’s confirmation of the offer of appointment. The Human Resources Unit will coordinate with the candidate regarding steps to obtain the visa. 

2) UN Officials traveling to UNGSC Brindisi for training, meetings, and conferences or temporary duty (TDY) not exceeding 90 days, regardless of their nationality, will not be required to obtain a visa prior to their departure, provided they hold a valid UN Laissez Passer along with: 

  1. A valid national passport (six-month validity).
  2. A supporting document indicating the travel purpose and duration. UN Personnel on training not holding a valid UNLP must obtain a mission visa prior to undertaking travel. Visas may only be obtained in the country of residence, or origin, of the applicant, from Italian Diplomatic Representations (Consulate/Embassy) or, in their absence, in other Consulates/Embassies representing the interests of the Schengen countries. Please note: Italian visas cannot be requested in Italy, nor can their validity be extended in Italy. EU citizens are exempt from visa requirements.

Airport

Brindisi has an international airport, the Papola Casale Airport, located only 6 km from the city centre. The second closest airport is that of the city of Bari. It is connected to the Brindisi airport via shuttle and train. 

Public Transportation

Brindisi is easy to navigate with public transportation. The local transport company is STP-Brindisi which runs both the ferry (motobarca) and the bus lines. Tickets can be bought on board: 

  • Bus/motobarca tickets cost 1.10 Euro (exact change required). 

  • Bus/motobarca tickets can be purchased in advance at any Tabacchi shop. 

  • You can use the MooneyGo.it (available in English) to buy tickets. Select the STP-Brindisi icon to purchase and activate tickets from your phone.

 

Ferry

The motobarca completes a loop around the port from the Port of Brindisi Centro to the Port of Casale, every 20 minutes.  From the ferry stop in Casale, it is a 15-minute walk to the base. The schedule can be found at: STP Brindisi - Motorboat service

Bus

The numbers 4 and 5 buses run from Brindisi Centro to the base. The schedule can be found at https://www.stpbrindisi.it/index.php/en

Taxi

For Taxi service contact +39 0831 5979019. It is recommended to use registered taxi companies (clearly marked as "taxi" and parked in their reserved parking area). The average fare from the Brindisi Airport to the City Centre or the UNGSC base should be around €25.00. For early morning pick-ups, it is advisable to book the service the evening before. 

During conferences and events organized by UNGSC, shuttle bus transportation to and from the Conference and Learning Centre is guaranteed only during the scheduled event days.

Entrance to the Base

Entry to UNGSC is allowed only to UN staff members, their dependents, and authorized visitors. To access the Base please contact your focal point and/or UN Security at +39 0831 056003. Kindly bring your passport.

 

Useful Information


Meals & Snacks


Breakfast, Lunch, and Snacks are available from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the UNGSC Cafeteria, located in Building 228. 

A variety of food is available, including vegan and vegetarian options. 

Building 94 has a take-away option, and drinks.  

Vending machines with coffee, light snacks, and beverages are also available in many buildings. 

Internet


Internet access is available everywhere on base.

Weather


From November to March, the average temperature ranges between 6º C. and 16º C. From June to September, the average temperature is around 30º C. 

Stores & Banks


Shops are generally open from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

Large department stores, Colonne Shopping Centre and AppiAntica Shopping Centre, located at 3 and 10 km outside Brindisi, are open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and may be reached by public transport (public service timetable available at this link: http://www.stpbrindisi.it/index.php/en). 

Banks in town are open from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Bank teller machines are available around the clock. Money transfer agencies are open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

In Case of Emergency


In case of emergency, from an internal line, dial the UNGSC emergency number 6112 and be prepared to provide the following information: 

  • your name and phone number. 

  • the reason for calling (serious injury, illness, fire, or security related). 

  • location of the injured and / or the incident. 

  • status of the victim (breathing, conscious or unconscious, bleeding etc.) and if the cause is known. 

  • what actions have been taken.

Please note, Italy’s national number for emergencies is 118.

Emergency


If your medical condition requires immediate medical assistance, go to Hospital Perrino Pronto Soccorso (ER), Strada statale 7 per Mesagne, or, if it’s not possible, call 118 for an ambulance.

For minor emergencies in evenings (from 8 pm) and weekends (i.e. sick child) you can go to the Guardia Medica at Ospedale Di Summa, Piazza di Summa, or call +39 0831 520089 for a house visit.

Pediatricians are available for consultations at a dedicated pediatric office in Perrino Hospital, every Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 am to 20:00 (including weekday holidays). The service is called SCAP (Outpatient Pediatric Consultation Service) and its aim is to guarantee continuity of pediatric assistance during the weekend and weekday holidays. It is located close to the ER (emergency ward)
