Investing in women and accelerating progress at UNGSC group Valencia

The theme for this year’s International Women's Day (IWD) “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” calls for concrete action to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. At UNGSC, with strong support from senior leadership, we are determined to make these goals a reality and foster a more inclusive and equitable workplace.

Here are some of the strategic initiatives we are successfully implementing:

- The Gender Coordination Group, comprised of gender focal points from across UNGSC’s Services, advances the System-wide Strategy on Gender Parity, raising awareness of gender issues, and mainstreaming gender considerations across UNGSC’s operations.

- The Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (GEWE) Internship Programme provides students with practical opportunities to develop gender related projects and campaigns, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5.

- A dedicated breastfeeding room on UNGSC premises supports working mothers and creates a supportive environment for all employees, in line with the UN’s System-Wide Strategy on Gender Parity.

- An interactive Gender Parity Dashboard tracks and analyzes gender balance data across staff, enabling informed decision-making and outreach, and reinforcing transparency and accountability in addressing gender disparities.

- Online seminars address critical issues affecting women's health and promote a safe and inclusive workplace for all, for example on "Overcoming Stigma in the Workplace" to address stigma related to women’s health needs.

- Training on integrating gender perspectives in technical work provides staff with tools to incorporate gender considerations in the design and implementation of technical projects.

UNGSC's dedication to promoting gender equality has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by its recognition by UNWOMEN at their 2023 Annual Gender Focal Point Meeting.

Going forward, UNGSC will build on our efforts with new training courses and initiatives such as the Gender Responsive Communication Strategy, and Gender Responsive Procurement and Budgeting.

Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast commitment to change, UNGSC is driving positive transformation, recognizing that investing in women is accelerating progress for all!
