First Virtual YPP Career Support Programme

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC), in collaboration with the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC)/Office of Human Resources, hosted the 2020 Young Professional Programme (YPP) Career Support Programme from 15 to 17 February 2021. It was the first to be conducted virtually through MS Teams. The programme is normally held on an annual basis, however, due to the travel restrictions last year, the programme did not take place.
Thirty-six YPP staff coming from eight different duty stations (New York, Geneva, Bangkok, Almaty, Kigali, Addis Ababa, Beirut and Nairobi) participated in the three half-day programme and heard from wide-ranging speakers on career perspective and options, in order to connect the group members to each other, provide key human resources information and inspire!
The UNGSC Director, Ms. Giovanna Ceglie, welcomed the participants; several sessions and speakers followed. The sessions included managed reassignment programme, career enhancement, career coaching, networking and branding, staff selection guidance, performance management, HR entitlements/benefits, and career paths of YPP Recruits.
Particularly for the career spotlight, three speakers, including the Assistant Secretary General Mr. Christian Saunders, shared their career journey across duty stations and job disciplines. The participants received tips on how to broaden their skills and manage their careers.
The participants were very enthusiastic and expressed their appreciation for the presentations and open conversations. They were actively involved, sharing their experience, needs, and expectations.
In light of the success of the virtual event, Ms. Kate Doyle, Staff Development Officer DMSPC, and one of the event organizers, said “similar initiatives for the same or different groups in a career development vein might be done in the future”.
