Micro-Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (M-UAS) are increasingly used to support peace and security, as well as humanitarian efforts.
At UNGSC, we are proud to work together with the United Nations C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations (UNCAP), to advance the training of M-UAS operators and trainers across UN field missions, ensuring the highest standards and integrating cutting-edge technologies.
This week’s UNCAP-Micro UAS Training Workshop, hosted at our Base in Valencia, brought together key stakeholders to enhance training curricula, and consider a wide range of issues related to the deployment of M-UAS in the field.
“UAS play a critical role in cease-fire monitoring, the identification of threats, minimization of risk of personnel, and data collection for the environment,” noted keynote speaker, Inspector Jefe Jaime Cuenca Jiménez, of the Spanish National Police. “They also incur responsibility for their proper use, to guarantee safety and privacy,” the Inspector added.
At the workshop, representatives of Member States, UN Headquarters, the Regional Service Centre Entebbe /UNCAP, field missions, and UNGSC reaffirmed our shared commitment to equipping all operators and trainers with the knowledge, tools, and experience to utilize M-UAS in the most, safe, respectful, and effective manner.
The technical agreement between UNCAP and the Government of France for M-UAS training, with the hosting and delivery of the “Training of Trainers” course at the UAS School in Chaumont, France, since 2021, is a valuable component of this endeavor. “France is pleased to support the UN’s efforts, including for the sharing of tactical and technical knowledge on M-UAS operations,” stated Captain Dumont of the Army of France.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Luxembourg is also actively engaged, facilitating access to the European A2 License Exam for M-UAS operators.
Going forward, enhancements to our M-UAS training are projected in the areas of data management and imagery interpretation capabilities, simulation, new software, mapping, and LiDAR (Light detection and ranging), Counter-UAS, and drone digital forensics capabilities.
The organizers express gratitude to the Governments of France, Spain, and Luxembourg, as well as to the Community of Valencia for their valuable support.
