Fuel management is essential to the operation of field missions. Two powerful tools can now be combined to support data-driven decision-making and ultimately reduce both waste and risk.

The EFMS (Electronic Fuel Management System v2)⎯long the primary tool for fuel management and reporting in the field–and Unite FRIM (Field Remote Infrastructure Monitoring)⎯the latest Internet of Things (IoT) tool, which is being implemented across many missions to collect real-time data through sensors⎯complement one another. When used together, they generate an automated, accurate, realtime fuel inventory to measure consumption and meet refueling needs.

Key features of this combined approach include enabling UN entities to calculate the energy generated for every liter of fuel used, as well as anomaly detection⎯sending alerts when the data reports an irregularity and prompting staff to check for leaks in the equipment, refueling malfunctions, or even fuel theft.

The benefits of enhanced data collection, reporting, and measuring of efficiency, have already been demonstrated on the ground. In UNISFA, a pilot project was launched to improve reporting on fuel usage and the efficiency of UN Owned Equipment. FRIM supplemented EFMS through automated monitoring of the energy generated, fuel levels, and fuel flow at the Powerhouse level. This allowed staff to track the performance of individual generators and fuel tanks and to view synchronized data as a single power generation unit, facilitating management.

In UNSOS, the project “Unite FRIM Data as a Service (DaaS)” integrated data from Unite FRIM, EFMS, and the local fuel contractor, enabling the Fuel Unit to more easily track and report on fuel deliveries and consumption, as well as to identify trends for better planning and management of the fuel supply chain. "As UNSOS Fuel Unit, we are glad to witness the realities of FRIM,” notes Phillip Mugabi of the UNSOS Fuel Unit. “We look forward to the enhancements that will come with new fuel sensors and fuel flow meters, which should enhance our remote monitoring and controls."
